​Khon

Thailand’s most formal and prestigious classical masked dance-drama, historically performed exclusively within the royal court to enact scenes from the Ramakien, the Thai version of the ancient Indian Ramayana. Khon brings the epic to life through elaborate lacquer-and-gold masks, heavily embroidered silk costumes, highly stylized physical gestures, and a live piphat orchestra accompanied by offstage vocal narrators (pakhon). Characters are categorized into four distinct archetypes—heroes (Phra), heroines (Nang), demons (Yak), and simian warriors (Ling) led by the monkey general Hanuman..

But beyond aesthetics, the Ramakien reveals a deeper cultural kinship with India’s Ramayana. Both epics uphold virtues such as loyalty, honor, and self-sacrifice, and both explore complex human emotions within a divine framework. The Thai adaptation, however, integrates Buddhist morality and Thai royal ideology, portraying Phra Ram as a chakravartin - an ideal king who governs with compassion and righteousness, blending Hindu and Buddhist statecraft.​

Nang Yai 

 

Lliterally translating to 'large hide' for the animal skins used, this is one of Thailand’s oldest high-court performing arts. It served as a sacred visual and dramatic medium dedicated almost exclusively to portraying the episodes of the Ramakien - the Thai national epic adapted from the ancient Indian Ramayana. Originating during the Sukhothai and early Ayutthaya periods, Nang Yai utilizes large, intricately perforated cowhide panels, painstakingly hand-carved and dyed to depict gods, demons, and dramatic battle scenes.

 

Rather than operating behind a screen like small shadow puppets, Nang Yai puppeteers dance dynamically in front of and behind a backlit white cloth screen, combining choreography, live traditional music (piphat), and rhythmic poetic narration (kham phak). The performance served a political and spiritual purpose: by telling the story of Phra Ram (Prince Rama) defeating Tosakanth (Ravana), Nang Yai reinforced the sacred legitimization of Thai kings as virtuous, divine incarnations of Vishnu restoring righteousness to the world, transforming the ancient Indian epic into a core pillar of Thai royal heritage.
